Strategy 8B

Improve transportation health and safety outcomes

Traffic fatalities and severe injuries are serious public health threats: on average, one person is killed every four days as a result of a traffic collision on unincorporated County roadways. Further, people walking and biking are the most vulnerable road users. In fact, traffic collisions are the leading cause of death for children in LA County and also place older adults and people of color at heightened risk.

To reduce injuries and collisions while also encouraging biking and walking (also referred to as "active transportation"), local governments can invest in infrastructure improvements such as protected bike lanes and
paths as well as wider sidewalks and better crosswalk infrastructure. By embracing a "living streets" approach, we can further ensure that our streetscapes prioritize pedestrians while reducing urban heat and
improving environmental performance.
